Do QR Codes Expire? Static vs Dynamic Explained

Static QR codes never expire. Dynamic codes can stop working when a subscription ends. Learn the difference and how to avoid broken printed codes.

· 2 min read

Short answer: a QR code itself never expires. It is just a pattern of squares. What can expire is a service the code depends on. That difference matters a lot if you have printed thousands of menus, labels or business cards.

Static QR codes

A static code stores your content directly in the pattern: the website address, Wi-Fi password or contact details. Nothing sits between the scan and the content. As long as the destination exists (for example, your website), the code works, forever, with no account and no fees.

Dynamic QR codes

A dynamic code stores a short link that points to the code company's server, which then redirects to your real destination. That allows you to change the destination later and count scans. But it also means your printed code depends on that company: if the subscription lapses, many services deactivate the redirect, and every printed code stops working or shows an ad page.

The "subscription trap"

Many businesses discover this only after a free trial ends: their menus or packaging suddenly lead to an error or a payment page. Reviews of several QR services describe exactly this. Before you print, ask one question: "If I stop paying, will this code still work?"

How to get the benefits without the risk

  • Use a static code that points to a page on your own website, such as yourdomain.com/menu.
  • When the content changes, update that page. Every printed code keeps working.
  • For scan counting, add UTM parameters to your link and read them in your analytics.

Every code made with this generator is static, so nothing we do can ever switch your codes off, even if you cancel a paid plan.

Make it yourself in under a minute

  1. Open the generator

The Turn any link into a QR code opens with the right content type already selected.

  2. Fill in the content

Enter the link, network, contact or message. The preview updates instantly.

  3. Brand it (optional)

Add your logo and colors. The scan test checks every change.

  4. Download and print

Black codes download free as PNG. Use SVG for print with a paid plan.

Quick answers

Why did my QR code stop working?

If it was a dynamic code, the subscription or trial may have ended. If it is static, the destination page may have moved or the print may be damaged or too small.

Can I edit a static QR code?

No, but if it points to a page on your own site, you can change that page anytime.
