How to read a barcode from an image

  1. Press Scan with camera and hold the barcode so the bars run across the screen, or upload a sharp photo.
  2. Fill most of the frame with the barcode and avoid glare on glossy packaging.
  3. The number and barcode type appear on the right. Retail codes (UPC/EAN) also get a check-digit test.

Supported barcode types

Retail: UPC-A, EAN-13 and EAN-8. Short UPC-E codes are not supported yet. Logistics and industry: Code 128, GS1-128, Code 39, Code 93, Interleaved 2 of 5, ITF-14, Codabar and GS1 DataBar. 2D: QR Code, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec.

A valid barcode is not proof of a genuine product

The scanner reads the digits and confirms the check digit is mathematically correct. Anyone can print a barcode with a valid check digit, so this does not verify who made a product or whether it is authentic. To check a GS1 company prefix, use GS1's official Verified by GS1 service. Need to work out a check digit yourself? Use our check digit calculator.

Privacy

Scanning runs entirely in your browser. Camera frames and images are not uploaded, saved or logged, and Wi-Fi passwords shown in results are not stored.

Frequently asked questions

Which barcode types can it read?

UPC-A, EAN-13, EAN-8, Code 128 and GS1-128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF and ITF-14, Codabar, GS1 DataBar, QR, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec.

Is the barcode scanner free?

Yes. Scanning is free, needs no account and has no limit.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Barcodes are decoded inside your browser; the image never leaves your device.

Does scanning a UPC tell me who made the product?

The scanner reads the number in the barcode and checks its check digit. A valid number is not proof that a product is genuine, and we do not look the number up in a product database.

Why does my barcode not scan?

Linear barcodes need a sharp image with the bars running across the frame. Fill the frame with the barcode, avoid glare and keep the camera steady. Very thin or damaged bars may not decode.

Can I use it with a laptop webcam?

Yes, but webcams often cannot focus close up. Hold the barcode farther away, or take a phone photo and upload it.
