Higher error correction lets the code survive damage and logos, but makes it denser. Auto uses H when a logo is added.
UPC numbers are part of the GS1 system. To sell in major US and Canadian stores or on Amazon, license a company prefix from GS1 US and assign numbers from it. Numbers bought from resellers are often rejected by large retailers.
The nominal UPC-A symbol is 37.29 × 25.93 mm. It can be scaled from 80% to 200%. Don't cut the bar height; trimming the bars is a common cause of scan failures at checkout.
UPC-A has 12 digits and is used mainly in the US and Canada. EAN-13 has 13 digits and is used everywhere else. Modern scanners read both.
